Biography
Born in Sogndal . After graduating from the University of Oslo in 1914 (defending a dissertation on North Atlantic trade winds ) he worked at the Geophysical Institute in Leipzig . Then he worked as a meteorologist in Bergen . From 1918 to 1925 he led scientific research on the expedition on the schooner Mod , during which it was established that Cape Chelyuskin is the northernmost point of Eurasia . In 1926 he took the place of professor of geophysics at the University of Bergen. In 1931, together with Hubert Wilkins, he took part in the on the Nautilus submarine. From 1936 to 1948 he was at the head of the . In 1938 he was awarded the Alexander Agassiz medal . From 1948, at the end of his life, he headed the Norwegian Polar Institute .
In honor of Harald Sverdrup, the unit for measuring the flow of water in the ocean current is 1 Sv = 10 6 m³ / s
