He received his Ph.D. in Entomology in 1977 at the University of Georgia. In 1970 he studied at the Institute of Ecology.
Fellow of the Southwestern Biological Institute of Arizona University , where he is also a professor at the Department of Entomology [1] .
He lives in Tucson , Arizona [2] .
J. Schmidt gained fame as a connoisseur of bites and stings of insects from around the world, who tested them for himself. During his career, insects have bitten and stung him hundreds of times [3] . (In his own words, he experienced it more than a thousand times by representatives of about 150 different species (often by accident) [4] .) Although Schmidt opposed biting and stinging him, sometimes he tends to be driven by research interest [5] .
In 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Entomology.
Co-editor of Insect Defenses: Adaptive Mechanisms and Strategies for Prey and Predators (1990). The author of the book "The Sting of the Wild: The Story of the Man Who Got Stung for Science" (2016), which received positive reviews [6] .
