In 1834, the city of Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the Brazilian Empire , but was not part of any Brazilian province, having a special status of the so-called "neutral municipality." The surrounding province of Rio de Janeiro (which did not include the city) had a capital in the city of NiterΓ³i . When Brazil became a republic in 1889, Rio de Janeiro retained the status of capital, and the city became a federal district, while the provinces became states.
When the capital was moved to Brasilia in 1960, the new federal district was separated from the state of Goias , and the old became the state of Guanabara. The first governor of the state was Carlos Lacerda , who objected to the transfer of the capital.
In 1975, when the states of Guanabar and Rio de Janeiro merged into the new, larger state of Rio de Janeiro , the city of Rio de Janeiro became the municipality of the new united state and its new capital.
