Boris Mikhailovich Popov (1913—1942) - Soviet and Ukrainian zoologist . Author of about 20 scientific articles. One of the authors (posthumously) of the first issue of the first volume of the publication Fauna of Ukraine . He studied the fauna of birds and mammals, feeding of owls, the distribution of rare mammalian species, the migration of animals. The most famous publications of the scientist are bat research.

Biography
Born December 21, 1913 in Sumy in the family of an agronomist. He graduated from agricultural college.
In 1930 he began working at the Kiev Agrobiostation in the circle of young naturalists. In the same year he was admitted to the laboratory for the study of rodents of the entomology department of the Kiev Agricultural Experimental Station, where he worked successfully until 1932. During this period, he participated in a number of expeditions in Kiev , Chernihiv , Kharkiv , Vinnitsa and other regions of the Ukrainian SSR , which were devoted to the study of harmful rodents.
In 1931 he began working as a zoologist for an integrated expedition in the area of construction of the Dnieper . In these expeditions, he collected numerous factual material on the fauna of mammals and birds, especially rodents, which enriched the funds of the Zoological Museum of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and is still widely used in a number of zoological works.
In 1933–1935 he worked at the Plodyagodny Institute (Kiev) as a zoologist, and also participated in a number of scientific expeditions, including to Odessa, then Kamenetz-Podolsk and Zhytomyr regions.
In 1936 he was accepted as a junior researcher at the Zoological Museum of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (now the Zoological Museum of the NNPM of the NASU). He studied at the Kiev State University, worked on his thesis.
During 1938–1939, he worked in the Mountainous Reserve of the Academy of Sciences and, based on the results of these studies, published a review “Materials on the mammalian fauna of the mountainous reserve and its environs” (1940).
Since 1940, he became interested in the history of the fauna of Ukraine and began working in the Department of Paleozoology of the Institute of Zoology (now the Department of Paleozoology of the National Museum of Natural History). He conducted a number of paleontological excavations in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions.
In 1941, he finished work on his main work, “The Bats of the Ukrainian SSR,” which he was supposed to defend as a dissertation for a PhD degree in biological sciences, but this work was not defended or published due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War . This work in a certain processing was included as an integral part (the section on bats) of the first volume of the publication Fauna of the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1941, mobilized into the army. He died on January 20, 1942 near the Dolgoe Popasnyansky District Farm (now the Slavyanoserbsky District) of the then Voroshilovgrad Oblast . The exact burial place is unknown, there are no war grave signs in the village.
