“The Pilot Returns” ( Italian: Un pilota ritorna ) is an Italian feature film of 1942 , directed by Roberto Rossellini . This is the second film of the so-called “fascist trilogy” of the director, in which the armed forces of the fascist regime are praised. The film was shot with the active support of the Italian Air Force , Vittorio Mussolini , son of the Duce and friend of the director, had a hand in the script of the film [2] .

The first trilogy movie, The White Ship , was Rossellini's first full-length feature film in his career. It was released in 1941, had significant commercial success and brought fame to the director. “The Pilot Returns” was filmed on a larger scale. If in the first non-professional actors were employed, in the second the main role was given to the rising star of Italian cinema Massimo Girotti , whose participation in many respects ensured the success of the film at the box office. The shooting took place at the airport in Viterbo [3] . The third film of the trilogy, “The Man with the Cross, ” was released in 1943.
Content
Story
During the Italian-Greek war, the downed Italian pilot Gino Rossati falls into the hands of the British. He is sent to a prisoner of war camp, where he meets a young Italian woman who voluntarily takes care of prisoners, and falls in love with her. After escaping from the camp, Gino steals a plane and returns to Italy to continue to serve his country. Upon his return, he learns that Greece was conquered by the Axis.
