History
Mahatma Gandhi spent 21 years in South Africa (1893-1914), only briefly leaving the country for visits to India and Great Britain [1] . In 1904, Gandhi met Hermann Callenbach , a German-Jewish architect, who arrived in 1896. In 1907, Kallenbach designed and built a house similar in form to two local huts ( rondavel ), but made using European construction methods [2] . It was called Kraal, which means "barn" in English and Afrikaans .
The house had stables and a tennis court, but both tenants led a strict life. Gandhi slept in a room in the attic, where he got up the stairs. Residents shared one kitchen and entertained their guests in a common living room [3] . The bedroom huts could only be accessed from the street. After settling, Callenbach's life changed, and the amount of money he spent on himself decreased tenfold. He and Gandhi left home in 1909.
In the following years, the house was replaced by several owners. Two more bedrooms and a porch were attached to it [4] . In 2009, it was bought by the French travel company Voyageurs du Monde to the chagrin of the Indian government, which wanted to acquire it as an Indian national monument. The house was restored and opened to the public as a museum and guest house in 2011 [5] .
