Location of Norway in Europe

The Norwegian Chess Championship ( Norwegian Norgesmesterskapet i sjakk ) has been held annually since 1918 (usually in July), with the exception of 1928 and 1939. (at that time tournaments of the northern countries were held in Oslo), as well as during the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany (1940-1944).

The tournament is held under the auspices of the Norwegian Chess Union .

In the XXI century. Norwegian championships are held in parallel in several classes. There are 7 classes in total: elite, workshop and classes numbered 1 to 5. Tournaments in age groups are also played (veterans, under 20 years old, under 16 years old, midgets - up to 13 years old and minipath - up to 11 years old). Tournaments are held according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds (within 8 days).
