The short story consists of an introductory paragraph reporting the complaint book in the office at a certain railway station , and 20 entries in it that do not meet the book’s goals. Among them: inappropriate passages, comic hooliganism, complaints about strangers, inept tracing-paper of French grammar .
Chekhov’s story was inspired by a mournful book of amusement for one of the stations on the Donetsk Road . Although the names in the story are fictitious, and the author changed some of them when publishing the collected works, the lost cigarette case in one of the records is asked to be transferred to “Andrei Yegorych” - the name of the real postmaster Voskresensk , in whom Chekhov worked then [1] .
The Complaint Book quickly became popular with a wide circle of readers [2] , the story went into quotes, and his last phrase, “ Though you are the seventh, but a fool, ” is especially popular. She became a catchphrase [3] , and other writers put it into the mouths of their characters; this was done, in particular, by Bunin in the Inscriptions and Kuprin in the Headquarters Captain Rybnikov.
