Biography
In his youth, Quintana studied law at the University of Salamanca . The early poetic works of Kintana, in which he glorified love and beauty, as well as the first tragedy published by him: “El duque de Viseo”, do not represent anything significant. In 1805, the author was glorified by the tragedy “Pelayo”, dedicated to the gothic hero who led the Reconquista .
In later poems: “Al combate de Trafalgar”, “Al armamento de las provincias españolas contra las franceses”, “A España, después de la revolución de Marzo” and others, who gave him loud fame, Manuel José Quintana kindled the hearts of his compatriots the struggle against the foreign yoke of the French Bonapartists. In 1808 he took the place of the secretary of the Cortes and issued a series of energetic proclamations and manifestos. However, after the restoration of Ferdinand VII, Quintana was imprisoned in a fortress, where he spent six years. The coup of 1820 restored to him his freedom and even a high administrative position. In 1840, Quintana was invited to be the tutor of the young Queen Isabella II . In 1845, he became a senator.
In 1854, Quintana received the title of Spanish grandee, and in 1855 he was crowned in the Palace of the Senate as the crown of the poet. He wrote some more tragedies: “Roger de Flor”, “El Príncipe de Viana”, “Blanca de Borbón” and excellent biographies of famous Spanish figures (“Vidas de españoles célebres”).
Manuel José Quintana died in poverty and was buried at the royal expense.
