Hannibalova (Annibalov) oath - a popular expression, meaning a firm determination to fight with someone or something and win, oath to make something a matter of their whole life.
When Hannibal was nine years old, his father Hamilcar took him to Spain , where he wanted to compensate his city for the losses suffered during the First Punic War . Before going on a campaign, his father offered sacrifices to the gods, and after the sacrifice he called Hannibal to himself and asked if he wanted to go with him. When the boy happily agreed, Hamilcar made him swear in front of the altar that he would be an implacable enemy of Rome all his life.
According to Polybius and some other historians, Hannibal himself told the Syrian king Antiochus III this story [1] [2] . The phrase "Hannibal's oath" became winged [3] .
In the history of Russia, the Hannibal oath of the revolutionaries Herzen and Ogarev is known, who, in their early youth, gave a vow all their lives to fight the Tsarist regime in Russia.
