Biography

Born in the family of a merchant in 1542 in the city of Vejle (Vejle), whence he received his nickname. He received an excellent education, which, thanks to his brilliant abilities, he finished unusually early, at the age of 14 he went to study in Ribe and after graduation he entered the University of Copenhagen .

Already twenty years old, in 1562 he was appointed mentor to the young Tycho Brahe , the future famous Danish astronomer , with whom he went on a foreign trip and subsequently became friends. From 1565 he studied at the University of Wittenberg , which he graduated in 1566, and in 1568 was appointed a priest in the castle of Copenhagen.

Then he took the place of the court preacher and at the same time was engaged in various literary works, in which he was a preacher, a poet, an archaeologist, and, finally, a historian.

He was the first in 1575 to translate the famous Chronicle of Saxo Grammaticus into Danish, that is, the history of Denmark, written by this "learned clerk" of Bishop Absalon in Latin and therefore accessible only to scholars. Having made the chronicle accessible to the understanding of the majority of his people, Vedel rendered a great service to his native country: the excellent translation in language and grace of the syllable aroused the readers' love and desire to study the history of the motherland and significantly contributed to the general uplift of the national spirit.

In 1584, he was appointed royal historian and became a prelate . In 1591 he published the collection "Hundredvisebogen", consisting of one hundred Danish ballads, which became a solid foundation for the subsequent knowledge of the old Danish literary tradition.
