The nephew of writer Juris Nakens , in whose house he spent the summer months. He graduated from the district school in Limbaži , then the teacher seminary of Janis Tsimze in Valka (1868). He worked as a teacher in Liaudon (1868–1870), Vietalva (1870–1881), Sausney (1883–1886), and in 1886–1895. He headed the parish school in Vietalva, founded a charity there, led the parish choir, with whom he took part in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Song Festivals . He published the textbooks “The first course of nature knowledge for the public school” ( Latvian. Dabas mācības pirmais kurss tautas skolās ; 1878), “Study of the Latvian language” and “Geometry” (both 1890), the first textbook “Theory of Latvian literature” ( Latvian. Latviešu rakstniecības teorija ; 1892).
Since 1879, he published articles in the Golos newspaper ( Latvian. Balss ) on education, school life, the study of nature, the Latvian language, etc. In 1895 he moved to Riga, worked in the editorial office of the Golos newspaper, at the same time actively collaborating with the newspaper "Baltic Herald" , in 1905-1906. was her responsible editor. In 1906, the newspaper was closed, and Kalnins spent 8 months in prison. In 1907–1917 He worked in the newspaper Dzimtenes Vēstnesis , in 1917-1918. - in the newspaper Rīgas Latviešu Avīze . In 1917, together with Janis Akmens and Nikolai Šilins, he took part in the revival of the Baltic Herald.
He published biographical essays about his mentors Nakens and Tsimze, the Latvian translation of the ballad of Heinrich Heine “Belshazzar” ; participated in the Latvian translation of Gustav Freitag ’s novel “Income and Expense”.
