Alfonsodeuro , Afonsodeuro ( port Afonso de ouro ) is the name of the first Portuguese gold cruzado minted during the reign of Afonso V (1438-1477) [1] [2] .

These coins were first issued in 1457 at the mints of Lisbon and Porto . According to their characteristics (3.55 g of gold 989 samples [3] ), alfonsodeuro was repeated by ducats widespread in medieval Europe. One gold coin corresponded to 253 Branco reals [3] .
The obverse contains the coat of arms of Portugal, over which lies the cross of the Avis Order (Afonso V was the grandson of Grandmaster Juan I ) [4] . The first word of the circular inscription "CRVZATO: ALFONSI; QUINTI; REGIS" [5] , meaning "bearing the cross", and gave the name to the new monetary unit. On the reverse of the coin in the center was a cross and a circular inscription “+ ADIVTORIVM: NOSTRVM: IN: NOMINE” [5] . The design of the coin was symbolic, emphasizing the preparations for the crusade declared, but not held, by Pope Kalikst III for the liberation of Constantinople [4] .
After the death of Afonso V, his successors continued to mint gold cruzado. Their weight and design have changed. For a century, they remained the main trading coin of Portugal [3] [4] .
