History
After the transformation of Poltava into the center of the Poltava province in 1802, in accordance with the general plan , the city center was reconstructed and expanded, during which the earthen ramparts of the Poltava fortress were demolished and the moats filled up. As a result, at the beginning of the 19th century, a vast wasteland was formed within the city [1] .
In 1905, the city government decided to create a botanical garden on the site of the wasteland, the creation of the garden was entrusted to the Zemsky gardener I. M. Orlovsky [1] .
On July 27, 1909, on the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava, the opening of the Petrovsky Park, named after Peter I [1], took place .
Before the revolution of 1917, visiting the park was limited (the park was fenced, guarded by a guard, and two gates were open to the public from 9 am to 10 pm) [1] .
During the Civil War, the park fell into disrepair, but restoration began in 1921. The old fence was replaced with a parapet, after which the park became open around the clock for visiting [1] .
On the territory of the park, 27 Red Army soldiers who died on January 19, 1919 in Poltava, as well as members of the first Poltava Council of Workers 'and Soldiers' Deputies, the communists brothers Peter and Anatoly Litvinov, who were killed in Mirgorod in April 1919, were buried in a mass grave [1] .
On March 13, 1926, a monument to T. G. Shevchenko (sculptor I. P. Kavaleridze ) was erected and opened in the park [1] .
In 1930, opposite the Petrovsky Park, on the site of the old market square, the Pioneer Park was created (complementing the composition of the historical center of Poltava) [1] .
In the late 1930s, a fountain began operating in Petrovsky Park (a circular pool in the center of which a sculptural composition of five children holding a round dance was installed), which became the first fountain in the city [2] .
On May 9, 1957, a granite stele was erected on the central avenue at the entrance to the park - a monument to part of the Soviet soldiers-liberators, participants in the battles of September 21–23, 1953 for the liberation of the city from German occupants [1] .
As of the beginning of 1989, the total area of the park was 2 hectares, over 30 species and subspecies of trees grew on its territory (several types of maple , elm , blue spruce , Virginian juniper ), as well as ornamental shrubs and flowers [1] .
After the independence of Ukraine, the park was transferred to the balance of the communal enterprise “Decorative cultures”, the fountain is maintained by Poltavavodokanal [3] .
At the end of December 2008, the fountain in Petrovsky Park was connected to the electric network and received a backlight (which turns on during the New Year holidays) [4] .
In 2009, the Poltava City Council began work on inventorying and determining the boundaries of land plots of Poltava parks (including Petrovsky Park) [5] .
