Ferry Wertman ( niderl. Ferry Weertman ; born June 27, 1992 in Amsterdam , North Holland , the Netherlands ) - Dutch swimmer , winner of the World and European Championships in swimming. The champion of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Zheineiro in the 10 km open-water swimming discipline, the world champion of 2017 at the same distance. Werman is the second Dutchman who won the Olympic gold medal in this discipline. Before him, the achievement belonged to Martin van der Weyden in 2008 [1] .

Biography

Ferry Wertman was born on June 27, 1992 in the town of Narden . He began training at the age of six at the Otters club in the eastern part of Amsterdam. Since 2013 she has been training on the basis of NTC (Nationaal Training Centrum) [2] .

Speech at the 2014 World Aquatics Championships in Berlin brought him two gold medals. The highest awards were obtained in the disciplines - a marathon of 10 km and 3 × 5 km of command. In the first case, with the result (1: 49: 56.2) Vertman outrun the German and Russian swimmers. Secondly, the Dutch team with the result (55: 47.8) won first place, leaving behind rivals from Greece (56: 05.5) and Germany (56: 14.8) [3] .

During the World Championships in water sports , which was held in Kazan, Vertman won a silver medal in the marathon at 10 km. The second silver medal on his account as part of the Dutch team at a distance of 3 × 5 km. Since the result of the Dutch and Brazilian teams was identical (55: 31.2), it was decided to award both teams with silver medals. Gold went to athletes from Germany [4] .

Wertman won another gold medal at a competition during the European Championships in short-water swimming, which was held in the Dutch Horn . Having overtaken his main rivals from the UK and France, with a score of 1: 55: 20.6 he won first place [5] .

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Vertman won the gold medal in open-water swimming for 10 km. With a score of 1: 52: 59.8, he beat rivals from Greece (1:53:02) and France (1: 53: 04.8) [6] .

At the 2017 World Championships, the Dutch swimmer became the world champion, ahead of the current American champion Jordan Wilimovsky [7] in a bitter struggle at the finish line.
