Juan de Lancaster already held the title of Marquis of Torres Novas when the king granted him the new title of Duke of Aveiro. Later, his descendants supported the claim of the King of Spain, Philip II, to the Portuguese throne during the succession crisis in Portugal in 1580 . Thus the dukes of Aveiro became the second aristocratic house in Portugal after the dukes of Bragança .
Raimundo de Lancaster, 4th Duke of Aveiro (1620–1666), supported the traditional politics of his home towards the Habsburg monarchy even after the revolution in Portugal in 1640 . In response, the new king of Portugal, Juan IV of the Bragança dynasty, confiscated the property of Raymond de Lancaster. In 1668, his uncle, Peter de Lancaster (1608–1673), Archbishop Evora (1648–1654) and Braga (1654–1670) became the new (5th) Duke of Aveiro. He died childless in 1673 .
The ducal title was inherited by his nephew, Maria de Guadeloupe de Lancaster, 6th Duchess of Aveiro (1630–1715), who was married to the Spanish aristocrat, Manuel Ponce de Leon, Duke de Arcos . She was the daughter of Georges de Lancaster, 1st Duke of Torres Novas (1594–1632), and sister of Raimondo de Lancaster, 4th Duke of Aveiro. Maria returned to Portugal with her youngest son, while her husband and eldest son remained in Spain. She regained control of her home and estates, recognizing the Bragans dynasty.
In connection with the participation of the 8th Duke of Aveiro in the Tavor case (conspiracy against the king) in 1758 , all the possessions of the Dukes of Aveiro were confiscated, their coat of arms was liquidated, their houses were destroyed, and the land was sprinkled with salt. On January 13, 1759, the Duke of Aveiro, with his sons and son-in-law, was executed. Since 1759, the ducal title ceased to exist. However, in 1939, Duarte Nuno, 23rd Duke of Bragança (1907-1976), granted the title of Duke Aveiro Caetano Enriquez Pereira Faria Saldanier de Lancastre, Count Alcasovás, who did not use it. Currently, distant relatives of José de Mascarenhas da Silva and Lancaster live in the cities of Aveiro (Ramos-Sarrico family) and Alkasovas .

Spanish Dukes de Aveiro
After the death in 1673 of the childless Peter de Lancaster, 5th Duke of Aveiro, his niece Maria de Guadalupe de Lancaster became his heiress. In 1679, the King of Portugal finally recognized her as the 6th Duchess of Aveiro, provided that she returned to Portugal, although she was married to the Spanish Duke de Arcos . Her husband is against it. She divorced him, returned to her homeland and took over the patrimonial titles and estates.
While their divorce was pending, King Charles II of Spain tried to stop her from returning to Portugal by granting her the Spanish title of Duchess de Aveiro in 1681 . This title belongs today to the Spanish Carvajal family and has never been recognized in Portugal.
Surname
The Dukes of Aveiro bore the surname “Lencaster” or “Lancaster” due to the fact that the King of Portugal, Juan I (1357-1433), the founder of the Avis dynasty, was married to Philip of Lancaster (1359-1415), the eldest daughter of John Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (1340–1399), and the founder of the House of Lancaster .
