The only Ekdionurus [1] ( lat. Ecdyonurus solus ) is a species of mayflies from the family of seven-day Mayflies Heptageniidae . Bio indicators A rare species included in the Red Book of Ukraine and in the Red Book of Crimea [1] .

Distribution

Endemic of the mountain Crimea (the Black and Alma rivers). The northern slopes of the mountains at heights of 150-450 m [1] [2] .

Description

The body length of adult mayflies is up to 13 mm, larvae without cerci are up to 14 mm. The body is tan. The wings are transparent. The length of the front wings of males is 11 mm (the hind wings are 3.9 - 4.3 mm); length of forelegs of males 10.2 - 10.9 mm. Eggs are oval in shape, length 164-171 microns, width 108-116 microns. Larvae of phytodetritophages are found in fast-flowing rivers and streams with a rocky bottom. Adults on coastal vegetation; flying in June and July. They hibernate at the larval stage. Bio-indicators of water pollution [1] [2] .

The species was first described in 2007 by a group of entomologists from Krakow (Małgorzata Kłonowska-Olejnik), Simferopol (Grigory Prokopov) and Lvov (Roman Godunko) based on materials from the Crimea [2] .

Security

The species is included in the Red Book of Ukraine and in the Red Book of Crimea . It is protected in the Crimean nature reserve . The reason for the change in numbers is water pollution and a change in the hydrological regime [1] [3] [4] .
