Evangelion ( ン ヴ ァ ン ゲ ゲ リ オ ン Evangelion ) (abbreviated as “Eve” ) - human-like biomechanical robots from the same - name anime series and manga “ Evangelion ”, as well as media franchise created on them. The name of these robots comes from the “ Gospel ” and was chosen by the author because it sounded intricate [1] . According to the plot, these robots are the main weapon in the war against the mysterious creatures, " Angels ", for unknown reasons, regularly attacking the planet. Initially, control of these robots is available only to a few fourteen-year-olds, called " Children ", however, later developed and able to replace them psevdopilot. In 2009, the cosplay of Evangelion-01 fully reproducing the appearance of the robot, became the mascot of Comic -76 [2] .
Design
Evangelion design was created by designer Ikuto Yamashita . The director of the show Hideaki Anno demanded from him a robot that looks like a demon, they are a giant, barely obeying man. According to him, under the image of a “monster robot” is hidden not so much a robot as a giant man [3] . As a result, the design of the robot began to resemble a book about Gulliver . For the sake of his ideas on design, Yamisite had to abandon plans in which the robot, by its very appearance, already showed its strength and greatness. However, he acknowledges that perhaps it was not what the director expected of him, and the design caused much controversy among the creators [4] .
Description
According to the plot, the Evangelions or “Eve Series” ( Jap. エ ヴ ァ シ リ ー ズ Eva Siri-Dzu ) are clones of the progenitor of Angels, Adam. The management system is built on the technology of transferring personality to an organic computer, also used in the creation of Magee supercomputers. Individual Evangelions do not have their own names and are distinguished by their serial numbers. Like Angels, Evangelions are able to use an AT-field , which is a kind of barrier that is practically impenetrable for conventional weapons and allows them to penetrate an enemy AT-field. This ability allows Eva to effectively confront the Angels.
Evangelion designs were started by the Gehirn Institute, and the first failed samples were dumped ten years before the events described in the series. During the development of Eva-01, one of the developers, Yui Ikari , whose son later became a pilot of this Evangelion, died inside her. Officially, it was called an accident, although it was rumored that Yui was killed by her husband [5] . Her soul remained imprisoned inside Eve and helped her son in difficult situations. Later, during one of the experiments with Eva-02, she lost her mind and as a result another scientist, Kyoko Zeppelin Sorju , hung herself. Her daughter also became a pilot of the corresponding Evangelion. About any incidents during the creation of Eva-00 in the series is not reported. At the start of the series and manga, three Evangelions were completed - Eva-00, Eva-01 and Eva-02. After the dissolution of the Gehirn Institute, his work with the Evangelions was continued by the Nerv Institute.
Evangelions are extremely expensive weapons, the repair of two copies of which can ruin an entire country. [6] When launched, they are monitored for the state of the “berserk” ( jap. 暴走 bo: with:) , in which Eves get out of control. Armor on them is designed to contain their strength. But despite such precautions, Eve still sometimes falls into a state of berserk, and in practice, the Eva-01 armor was unable to restrain her. During the battle, the Evangelions consume a large amount of electricity, supplied by a special power cable. They also have internal batteries. Depending on the mode of consumption, these batteries last from one to five minutes of the battle; in the mode of life support - more than sixteen hours. Also studied was the S2 engine used as an energy source by the Angels. However, his installation in Eva-01 at the end of the series was regarded as blasphemy. In battle, the Evangelions, in addition to their own AT-field, also use various cold and firearms. Also, if necessary, they can use additional protective equipment that allows evangelions, for example, to plunge into the mouth of a volcano.
To control the Evangelion, his pilot must be able to synchronize with his robot. According to the story, only some fourteen-year-old adolescents called “ Children ” are capable of this. At the same time, the level of synchronization with the Evangelion is influenced by both the pilot's abilities and some “Personal pattern” ( Jap. unchanged when changing Eve. Theoretically, each of the pilots can pilot any Eve, and in one of the series, the Eva-01 pilot was assigned as the reserve pilot Eva-02. In reality, however, the Evangelion may not accept the pilot who did not like him. Later, a pseudo pilot was also developed, imitating the thought processes of the pilot, which served as the basis for it. Although this technology did not allow for the digitization of the heart and soul, it made it possible to manage the Evangelion without the participation of a living pilot. However, it was possible to use the pseudopilot only once and when he tried again he was rejected by the Evangelion.
With the release of the full-length cartoon The End of Evangelion, the image of Evangelion has undergone some changes. In the original series, "Eve Series" meant Evangelions as such. In The End of Evangelion , however, this term began to denote industrial designs of Evangelions used by the Seele organization. At the same time, it was announced that Evangelion-01 is a clone of the progenitor of humanity, Lilith, and Yui Ikari deliberately moved into it. Also in the feature film, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu's soul, dwelling in Eva-02, was shown.
Prototypes and Test Gospels
Precursor Evangelions
Episode 23 reveals that Nerv made several dozen unsuccessful attempts to create a working Evangelion. The remains of these unsuccessful EVs are hidden in one of the lower levels of the Nerv headquarters. They all have orange head armor (the rest of the skeleton has no armor in principle). The first prototype creature has five eye cameras. For most of these defective EVs, organic parts have long since decayed, leaving nothing more than armored heads connected to a ridge, sometimes with an incomplete set of limbs. Many of these skeletons are extremely deformed, which suggests that their original appearance was eerily wrong.
The cut out director version of the 23rd episode expands this theme. In the original version, defective prototypes of Eva lay on a large empty floor, the remains of their limbs were carefully fitted to the spines and the rest of the body, and around the remains there was a contour corresponding to what position Eve would have if she were intact. When Shinji says that it should be something like a graveyard for Eva, Ritsuko says it's not that difficult, and nothing more than a dump for discarded prototypes. The director's version shows this “dump” more clearly: the remaining parts of the body of dozens of unsuccessful Evas were randomly dumped in a series of pits in the ground [7] .
In The End of Evangelion , while Misato is driving Shinji to Eve, you can see a lot of defective Eves hanging vertically behind their heads. The heads themselves exhibit a large number of different variations of the facial structure, sometimes looking almost like human skulls . In other frames, you can see the marks of differences in the human spine (such as 3-6 cervical vertebrae).
Imitation bodies
Three unfinished evangelions are stored in the Pribnou section at Nerv headquarters. They are devoid of armor, legs and cores, and have numerous cables extending from the neck instead of heads [8] . These machines were eventually infected with the eleventh Angel, Iruel . Perhaps these are reused early rejected models, but they appear only in one episode and the details of their device are unknown.
" Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone " shows that a simulator body is used in a training simulator, as opposed to anime or manga, where Eva-01 is shown with attached simulation equipment. This imitation body appears to be composed of fragments of the skeleton and nervous system of Evangelion, but without any actual means of displacement.
Evangelion Prototypes
The first two Eves are prototypes and are intended, first of all, to continue the research and experiments of Nerv [9] . Throughout the series, Nerv, in competition with Seele, is trying with all its might to maintain its monopoly on EV, due to the personal interests of Commander Ikari.
Evangelion 00
Evangelion-00 ( Jap. エ ヴ ァ ン ゲ リ リ オ ン 零 号 機 機 Evangelion Dzeroi: ki , Evangelion, machine number 0) is the first successful prototype of Evangelion. With a varied reading of the kanji , a variant of the name “Reigoki” is possible, which alludes to its pilot.
Pilot: First Child, Rei Ayanami .
Resident Soul: Status unknown.
Appearance: The appearance of the helmet is similar to unsuccessful predecessors, that is, it has two openings in the upper part. It has one red eye-camera on the face (as in the Cyclops) and a similar structure of green color on the crown; besides that, there is a “plug” on the crown of the head, covering the second hole. Whether these devices play any role on the head is not explained. Evangelion's own eyes in the series are not shown. Eve's mouth is supposedly blocked by armor, since it never opens during the series [10] . Eva-00 is the only original Eve that was not shown at least partially without its own armor (Eva-02 was shown in The End of Evangelion , and parts of Eva-01 - many times in the series). The armor was originally painted orange, as in previous prototypes. After serious damage in the battle with Angel Ramiel , replaced with similar armor Ev-01 and 02 and repainted blue with white glowing stripes [11] (in the manga, some parts of the orange armor remain). Despite the fact that the renewal of the Eva-00 armor made it look like the following Evangelions, there are still some differences and limitations. The shoulder “wings” added to the Eva-00 armor (which are also present on Eva-01 and 02) contain jet engines, as shown in the 11th episode during the battle with the 9th Angel, Matoriel . Since this is only a prototype, the Eva-00 cannot use D-type equipment.
Produced in Tokyo-3.
Operations: While in it, Rey independently destroyed the 15th and 16th Angels , participated in the destruction of the 5th, 9th and 10th Angels and was defeated in battles with the 13th and 14th Angels.
Destroyed. In a battle with the 16th Angel, Almisail , in order to finish off the Angel, Rei launches self-destruction.
This Eve twice came to a state of rabies on test launches, these were test launches with Ayanami Rey and Shinji Ikari. Both times she systematically tried to destroy the observation room with the people in it.
In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone , white areas are added to the orange color of the Evangelion-00, the thighs and forearms are almost completely gray.
Evangelion-01

Pilot: Third Child, Shinji Ikari .
Resident Soul: Yui Ikari .
Appearance: Armor is predominantly colored in purple, with elements of acid green, light blue, orange and black. Green and orange areas glow weakly in the dark [11] . There are no visible cameras, both Evangelion's own eyes are used, the mouth opens freely. Distinctive features - a long sharp chin and a horn on the helmet (which give Eva a frankly sinister look, some characters notice that Eva-01 looks like a demon). Chest armor plates have a unique design. The humanoid entity under armor has light brown skin, two green four-pupillary eyes, four small nostrils located in a semicircle, and red blood.
Produced in Tokyo-3.
Operations: While in it, Shinji independently destroyed the 4th and 17th Angels and participated in joint operations against the 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 16th Angels. In a frenzy, Evangelion-01 independently destroyed the 3rd, 12th, and 14th Angels, the 13th Angel was killed under the control of the pseudo-pilot. Frank defeats in the account of Eva-01 no.
Unlike other Evangelions, it comes from Lilith [12] . This Evangelion moved without energy at least three times in the entire series. In the 19th episode, Eva-01, after the destruction of Angel, swallowed Angel's body and his S²-engine, and then successfully interacted with him [13] . In addition, the Eva-01 also successfully worked even in the absence of a pilot or psevdopilota - for example, in the first series, she independently protected Shinji from a falling beam. This Eve is especially appreciated by Gendo, even to the point of being willing to sacrifice all the others [14] . During the complementation, Eva-01 turned out to be the center of the Impact, but made it, as Yui Ikari wanted.
In the manga , in contrast to the series, Evangelion-01 has its own personality and tries to impersonate Yui Ikari [15] . In addition, Rei and this Evangelion enter into telepathic contact, during which she forces him to shed Yui's guise. However, as in the series, he also carries the soul of Yui, who wakes up after Shinji, seeing the true face of Eve, calls his mother for help.
In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone Evangelion-01 received more green areas, and the intensity of their glow was enhanced. The knife and its storage mechanism also tweaked, but most of the armor has not changed. During his fight with Sakiel, the notes on the screens indicate that Sakiel has the blood type "Blue 04" ( eng. Blue 04 ) (since he is the fourth Angel), and Eva-01 the blood type "Blue A *", probably this indication the origin of Evangelions from Angels. Samusil and Ramiel are identified as having the type of blood "Blue 05" and "Blue 06", respectively. During the fight with Samusil, Evangelion's own skin was shown lighter than in the series.
Industrial Evangelion Models
Evangelion 02
Evangelion-02 ( э 機 ァ ン ン ゲ リ ン 弐 号 機 機 機 機 機 機 機 ки ки ки ки ки ки ки ки ки ки ки ки - - - - - боев 2 ) is the first fully functioning combat model of Eva.
Pilot: Second Child, Asuka Langley .
Resident Soul: Kyoko Zeppelin .
Appearance: The armor is predominantly colored red, a white band around the helmet, yellow-black arms. The mouth of the Evangelion opens freely. The head armor has two moving parts of the “visor”, one covers the jaws and the lower pair of eyes, the second - the upper pair of eyes. These plates are mounted and can move, opening and closing the eyes of Evangelion. Between the plates, four green round camera-eyes are installed, duplicating Evangelion's own eyes. It has a hidden weapon - a multi-barreled cannon that shoots needles. The mechanism of action taken can be seen during the underwater part of the battle with Gagil. Eva-02 has blue blood, which can be seen in battle with the 14th Angel Zeruel when he chops off Eve’s arms. Evangelion-02 has brown skin and orange four-pupil eyes, this can be seen when it is torn to pieces by serial Evangelions.
Made in the German branch of Nerv , delivered to Japan by the UN fleet (the flagship of the fleet - " Over the rainbow ").
Operations: While in it, Asuka independently destroyed the 8th Angel, participated in joint operations against the 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th Angels and was defeated by the 13th, 14th and The 15th angels.
Destroyed before the start of the third strike of the serial Evangelions.
Eva-02 once demonstrated the ability to work without energy - in The End of Evangelion , after its batteries were exhausted, she, along with Asuka, continued to gravitate towards the serial Eva. By that time, both of them were seriously injured and nothing more was enough for them. In two cases, an unusually high level of synchronization of Evangelion-02 was registered: in a battle with the 6th Angel Gagil , when there were two pilots in the capsule, and under the control of the 17th Angel Tabris .
Eva-02 is briefly featured in the Evangelion commercial : 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance after completing the first film of the series. She is being landed from a giant plane, and it is clear that Eva had a pair of small horns on her helmet and a couple of horns on her cheekbones at the mouth.
Evangelion-03
Evangelion-03 ( э 機 ァ ン ゲ ゲ リ ン 参 機 機 機 機 機 機 機 機 機 ки ки ки: ki , Evangelion, machine number 3 ) is the second combat model of the Evangelion.
Pilot: Fourth Child, Touji Suzuhara ; in the films of the series Rebuild of Evangelion - Second Child, Sikinami Asuka Langley .
Resident Soul: Unknown.
Appearance: Slightly different from the first industrial model. Evangelion-03 has an atypical color of armor - very dark, close to black, dark blue color and white-pink glowing stripes. Both eyes and the mouth of the Evangelion are not blocked. The head has a strange “predatory” shape - the top of the head is strongly rounded, and the jaw and neck are disproportionately increased in size.
Produced in the 2nd branch of Nerv ( Nerv-01 ) in Massachusetts , USA , delivered to Japan by transport plane.
Destroyed in the 18th series. During transportation, Evangelion-03 was infected and taken under control by the 13th Angel during a test run. Irreversibly destroyed by Evangelion-01 under the control of psevdopilota.
Evangelion-03 is shown in the video for the second film of the series Rebuild of Evangelion . Like the previous Evangelions, it has not changed much.
Evangelion 04
Did not appear in the series.
Pilot, resident soul. Unknown.
Appearance. Actually identical to model 03. According to Gainax materials, the model is colored silver, with black and red details.
Produced in the 3rd division of Nerv ( Nerv-02 ) in Nevada , USA .
Destroyed along with the entire Nevada branch of Nerv under unexplained circumstances, most likely related to the trial launch of the S²-engine (possibly sabotage). It is not established whether the robot was activated or not.
Other Industrial Models
According to Misato in the 22nd episode, it was originally planned that Eva-05 and Eva-06 will more or less continue the production model used for Ev 02-04. Nevertheless, when Seele began production of the production models of the Ev 05-13, these plans were curtailed. The unfinished original Eva-05 and 06 were dismantled for spare parts for the repair of Eva-00 and 02 after their battle with Angel Zeruil. Continuing the tradition of Japanese names for Evangelions, Eva-05 and 06 were to become "Gogoki" and "Rokugoki" , respectively.
Serial Evangelions
To accomplish its main task, Seele creates nine identical Evangelions (models 05-13 ).
Pilots: Unknown, The End of Evangelion shows capsules inserted in each of the robots with the words " Kaworu " and a serial number.
Resident souls and personality matrices: Unknown.
Appearance: Robots have the same structure and are predominantly painted white. The physical structure is different from the original EV, they are already in the shoulders and chest and wider in the hips. But the strongest difference is the folding deformable wings, which have sufficient force for free flight, and the heads, which, unlike the human-like heads of the originals, are straightened and smoothed, like cetaceans. Long jaws, pronounced muscles-lips, long gray tongues and a lot of saliva. They have no visible eyes [16] . In addition, they do not have mounts over their shoulders and heavy armor on the chest. Replicants of Spear Longinia are used as the main weapon. They behave like animals - they demonstrate incredible cruelty when they surround the defeated Eva-02 from the air in the same way as scavengers do, and tear it apart.
Places of production are not specified.
Destroyed in the process of complementation . In The End of Evangelion, serial Eves play a significant role in the implementation of the ritual leading to the Third Strike and the complementation of the Seele script. They participate in it, interact with Evangelion-01 and its pilot, form the Sephiroth Tree, and then commit suicide by piercing their cores with replicant spears. After the Third Impact, they drop dead to Earth.
All serial Eves use S² engines as energy sources, thanks to which they have full mobility and unlimited duration. They can fully recover, despite serious damage without regeneration.
They have an AT-field, since they were sent into battle with Eva-02. Also, AT-fields of serial EVs were registered after building the Sephiroth tree [17] .

In April 2010, the Yahoo! Japan conducted a survey among fans about whether they want to see a full-size bust of Evangelion, and if so, which particular Evangelion should be taken as a basis [18] . In the first survey, with a large margin, the answer was “yes” (97% of the votes). In the second - Evangelion-01 (78% of votes). On the question of what should be shouted before the Evangelion, the majority answered “I am the pilot of Eva-01, Ikari Shinji!” (36% of the votes) [19] . A month later, it was announced the creation of a pavilion containing a life-size bust of Evangelion-01, and reproducing the scene in which the main character of the series Shinji Ikari sees Eve for the first time. A mock-up of a full-size Evangelion contact capsule was also available, where for a certain fee other attractions could be photographed. In total, the cost of the pavilion was planned to be 150 million yen (about 1.6 million dollars) [20] . The area is 1460 m² [21] . On July 15, the completed bust of the Evangelion was presented to the press, and the opening of the pavilion took place on July 23 [22] [23] . On March 19, 2011, the bust of the Evangelion-02 was also planned to be shown in the “Beast” mode at the time of his meeting with Shinji [24] . However, the 2011 earthquake led to the postponement of the project [25] .
In April 2010, it was announced that the copyright holders of the series would sponsor the apr class team in the GT300 Super GT championship, the team debuted in the third race. Previously, this team, led by Hiroto Kaneso , won the race four times. As it was stated, the Toyota Corolla Axio car was supposed to receive a unique Eva Racing logo and a coloring repeating the Evangelion-01 coloring [26] .
