Distribution

Nearctic and Neotropics (from Canada to Argentina). One species was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands, the Polynesian Islands, and Europe (Greece and Spain) [1] .

Description

Body length from 8 to 25 mm, narrow (the ratio of body length to width is 4-5), legs are thin and long. The main color is tan, reddish-brown, orange-brown and brown-black to completely black. They differ in the cylindrical shape of the head. Predators that choose caterpillars of butterflies and other insects as victims. Large concentrations of hundreds of bugs on some plants are associated with a mutualistic relationship with the ants Allomerus decemarticulatus Mayr [1] .

Systematics

Over 70 species. The genus was first described in 1803 by the Danish entomologist Johann Fabrius ( Fabricius ; 1744-1808). It is close to the genera Atopozelus Elkins and Ischnoclopius Stål [1] [2] .
