Biography
The son of Prince Franz Joseph II . He was educated in Switzerland, graduating from the prestigious Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz private school, and then St. Gallen University .
Unlike most modern monarchies , which tend to limit the power of the head of state, Hans-Adam organized and won a referendum in 2003 aimed at expanding princely powers. However, at the same time, a law was enacted prohibiting the prince to use the veto if the parliament decides to change the form of government to a republican one .
On August 15, 2004, Hans-Adam II officially handed over the powers of day-to-day government to his son, Crown Prince Alois .
In September 2011, ahead of the referendum on decriminalizing abortion, Crown Prince Alois announced that he would veto any easing of the abortion ban, whatever the outcome of the referendum. In Liechtenstein, women who want to terminate a pregnancy travel to neighboring Germany or Austria.
