History
The former Rossendorf Research Center was founded in 1956 by the German Academy of Sciences. Until 1974 , the deputy director was a German physicist Klaus Fuchs .
After the reunification of Germany, he was reorganized into the Rossendorf Research Center. In 2011 , the Center became a member of the Helmholtz Society - an association of German research centers.
Research Programs
From Matter to Materials
With the help of modern research equipment, HZDR scientists strive to improve the properties of traditional materials and develop new ones. These include, in particular: modeling of casting steel , radiation sources and ultra-strong magnetic fields to study the properties of various materials, such as superconductors and the like. Fundamental research is also being carried out in order to obtain the possibility of using semiconductor materials in electronics and computer technology . In addition, studies are being conducted of magnetic fields in space and the occurrence of matter as a result of the Big Bang .
Cancer Cell Research
HZDR cancer cell research focuses on three main areas: research in the field of new radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis, development of imaging methods used in oncology and improvement of particle acceleration using laser technology.
Energy Research
HZDR scientists conduct research in the chemical and metal industries, nuclear safety, new technologies for the exploration, production and use of raw materials and bio-composite materials.
