Biography

Born in 1756 - the year the Seven Years War began , at which his father Alexander Savelyevich died in Silesia, commanding a cuirassier regiment.

His mother, who was a maid of honor under the regent, Anna Leopoldovna and had palace connections, enlisted her young son to serve in the Life Guards Preobrazhensky regiment and sent him to study in a boarding school in which only four boys were brought up [1],. Having entered military service in 1771 as a non-commissioned officer, the following year he was enlisted as a sergeant, and on March 15, 1774 he was promoted to ensign.

In 1783 he was dismissed "due to illness" with the rank of foreman [2] . Having settled in Moscow, he devoted, as he put it, “to the end of his incomplete education”: he read a lot, studied German, studied history and philosophy, eagerly swallowed the works of French encyclopedists. With enthusiasm, he began to teach literacy to his serfs in the yard. In his estate near Moscow, he composed a rich library of five thousand volumes, which partially burned out, partially plundered in 1812. Until 1811 he served in the Department of ancestry . He was elected several times by the Moscow district leader of the nobility ; held this position from July 25, 1810 to December 13, 1816 [3] . In 1817, A. A. Arsenyev was appointed a member of the commission for constructions in burnt Moscow - on his initiative, the Alexander Garden was laid along the Kremlin wall.

Produced in 1812 as full-time state councilors, and on November 21, 1821 - as privy councilors and senator . In 1834 he was identified as a senator of the non-present.

He had an extensive circle of acquaintances, which included not only representatives of the Moscow aristocracy, but also famous writers. A. A. Arsenyev’s house was visited by A. S. Pushkin, P. Ya. Chaadaev, I. I. Dmitriev, N. I. Nadezhdin and M. Yu. Lermontov, M. I. Glinka.

He died on November 17 ( 29 ), 1844 , and his eldest twenty-eight-year-old son, Alexander, died a month later. Both of them were buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery .

His heirs were the wife Nadezhda Mikhailovna (nee Kovalenskaya) and another son - Ilya Alexandrovich (1820-1877).
