Biography
Alex Dumitru was born on March 21, 1935 in the municipality of Mahmudiya, Tulcha County .
He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in 1956, when he became a member of the Romanian national team and thanks to a series of successful performances he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne . He played here with his partner Simion Ismailchuk in the standings of double canoes at distances of 1000 and 10000 meters: in the first case, he overtook all rivals and thereby won the Olympic gold medal, while in the second case he finished only in fifth in the final race, losing to the crews from the USSR, France , Hungary and Germany.
Having become the Olympic champion, Dumitru remained in the main composition of the rowing team of Romania and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1957, he visited the European Championships in Belgian Ghent, from where he brought silver and gold dignity awards, won in doubles at a thousand and ten thousand meters, respectively. A year later, together with the same Simion, Ismailchuk won the kilometer-long canoe program at the World Championships in Prague. A year later, at the European championship in West Germany, Duisburg took bronze in the same discipline.
As one of the leaders of the Romanian national team, Alex Dumitru successfully qualified for the 1960 Olympics in Rome . However, he could not repeat the success of four years ago - in tandem with his new partner Igor Lipalit , he showed the fourth result in the decisive race a thousand meters in the decisive race, stopping a step away from the prize positions behind the USSR, Italy and Hungary. His other crown discipline, C-2 10,000 m, was completely excluded from their program of the Olympic Games.
