Initially, only the cars in the sedan were represented in the BMW 5 series. Production of a station wagon type, called Touring, began in 1991. In 2009, the company also launched the production of fastback cars, they are called Gran Turismo.
On the cars of the first generation of the BMW 5 series, atmospheric in-line 4-and 6-cylinder gasoline engines were installed. In subsequent generations installed in-line 4-and 6-cylinder engines, 8-and 10-cylinder V-type engines, both atmospheric and turbocharged . Since 1982, diesel engines have also been installed on the series cars.
BMW 5 ranks second in the BMW series in terms of the number of cars sold, second only to the BMW 3 series. E12 - the first generation of the fifth series of BMW, the production of which was carried out from 1972 to 1981. These cars were released to replace the BMW Neue Klasse series. The first commercially available cars, models 520 and 520i, were completed with an in-line 4-cylinder engine. The following year, the next model, the 525, was introduced, on which an in-line 6-cylinder engine was installed.
There is no M-version in the range of models of the E12 generation. Nevertheless, the model M535i generation E12 is considered the predecessor of the models M5. [6] [7]
Models of the E12 generation were produced until 1981, but in South Africa, production of the model continued until 1984.

E28 - the second generation of the fifth series BMW, which was produced from 1981 to 1988. Initially, these cars were completed with gasoline 4 and 6-cylinder engines. Diesel engines began to be installed in 1983. In this generation, for the first time, the dashboard was turned towards the driver, and, in addition, the cars could be completed with an anti-lock system ( ABS ).
In the E28 generation, the BMW M appeared in the gamut of models of the fifth series. These cars were installed inline 6-cylinder engines S38 and M88 .

E34 - the third generation of the fifth series BMW, which was produced from 1988 to 1996. Initially, these cars were made only in sedan type bodies. In 1990, these cars also began to be made in the type of station wagon , which received the name Touring.
In addition to the new body type in this generation, the installation of all-wheel drive (from model 525iX) and 8-cylinder V-engines also began on cars of the fifth series. In the E34 generation, for the first time, the possibility of bundling cars with electronic stability control ( eng. ASC ), anti-skid system ( eng. ASC + T ), a 6-speed manual gearbox and active suspension ( eng. EDC ) appeared.
On the cars in this generation installed engines from a wide range of engines from nine series. These engines could be in-line 4-and 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder V-shaped.
In the E34 generation, the M5 cars were made in sedan and wagon bodies, they were installed in-line 6-cylinder S38 engines.

E39 - the fourth generation of the fifth series of BMW, the production of which was carried out from 1995 to 2004. Initially, these cars were made only in sedan type bodies. In 1996, these cars also began to be made in the type of station wagon, which received the name Touring.
On cars of this generation for the first time installed aluminum parts in the front suspension. In order to reduce the weight of the car in this generation significantly expanded the use of aluminum in the chassis parts. Also on these cars for the first time began the installation of 4-cylinder diesel engines.
On vehicles with 8-cylinder V-engines, in addition to the steering mechanism of the screw-ball nut type , which was installed on previous generations, the installation of a rack and pinion type mechanism on models with 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines also began. E60 - the fifth generation of the fifth series of BMW, the production of which was carried out from 2003 to 2010. In this generation, the series models were produced in two body types:
- 4-door sedan (body code - E60);
- 5-door station wagon (body code - E61).
Production of bodies in this generation began in the modification of a sedan. The body in the modification of the station wagon was presented in 2004.
In models of the fifth series of the E60 / E61 generation, a significant number of electronic functions are used, including iDrive, indicator on the windshield , adaptive cruise control , active steering (the function of intelligent steering angle control depending on the driver’s impact on the steering wheel), voice control. For the first time, E60 / E61 cars were equipped with turbocharged gasoline engines, 6-speed automatic transmissions and a regenerative braking system. New safety features include: adaptive headlights, night vision function, active head restraints, lane change control, and high-intensity emergency brake lamps. Unlike previous [16] [17] and subsequent (F10) [18] generations of the BMW 5, the dashboard of the E60 / E61 is not turned towards the driver. Also in the instrument cluster there is no engine temperature sensor. Only an overheat alarm is installed.

F10 is the sixth generation of the fifth BMW series, which was produced from 2009 to 2017. In this generation, the series models were produced in four body types:
- 4-door sedan (body code - F10);
- 5-door station wagon (body code - F11, known as Touring);
- 5-door fastback (body code - F07, known as the BMW 5 Gran Turismo );
- 4-door sedan with an increased wheelbase (body code - F18), presented only in the markets of China, Mexico and the Middle East.
In this generation, the F07 fastback car was introduced for the first time. In this generation, the following equipment became available for the vehicle: a hybrid power plant , an 8-cylinder turbocharged V-type engine, two-plate clutch (in the M5 version), adaptive rear axle steering control (the company name is Integral Active Steering), electric power steering , independent two- wheel drive front suspension, LCD electronic dashboard (brand name - Black Panel Display), automatic car parking mode (brand name - Parking Assistant). G30 - the seventh generation of the fifth series of BMW, the announcement of which occurred in 2016, [21] has been in production since 2017. [22] In this generation, the models are produced in three body types:

In this generation, the fastback body is derived from the fifth series and included in another BMW 6 series. [23]
Cars of the fifth generation G30 series are based on the same platform as the cars of the 7th generation G11 series.
