Crater Description

The surroundings of the Freud Crater. Shot of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe.

The closest neighbors of the Freud Crater are the Raman Crater in the northwest; Vyaysala crater in the east and Herodotus crater in the southeast. To the west of the crater is the Ocean of Storms ; in the north of it is the peak of Herodotus ; in the east of the Schroeter valley [1] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 13.4 km [2] , depth 360 m [3] .

The Freud Crater is located on the northwestern edge of the structure of the unofficially named Aristarchus plateau, a raised region with a diameter of about 120 km and a height of about 2000 m above the level of the Ocean of Storms , abundant in structures of volcanic origin, including furrows. The crater has a circular cup-shaped shape and is practically not destroyed. A shaft with a clearly defined edge. The inner slope is smooth, with a high albedo . The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 330 m [3] , the volume of the crater is approximately 30 km³ [3] . According to morphological characteristics, the crater belongs to the ALC type (by the name of a typical representative of this class - Al-Battani Crater C ).
