Biography

Barry Stewart was born on April 4, 1934 in Sydney . Inspired by rowing and canoeing, he was trained at one of the sports clubs in the state of New South Wales .

He achieved his first serious success at the international level in 1956, when he joined the main team of the Australian national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to defend the honor of the country at the home summer Olympics in Melbourne . Started here in the standings of single kayaks at a distance of 1000 meters, successfully overcame the preliminary stage, but in the decisive race took the last ninth place, behind the winner of the Swede Gert Fredriksson by almost 18 seconds.

In 1960, Stuart went to the Olympics in Rome - in twos with teammate Dennis Green , he reached the semi-finals only a thousand meters away, where he finished sixth, while in the solo kayak 4 × 500 meter relay program together with Green, Phillip Coles and Allan Livingstone showed the third result in the semi-final race.

Four years later, Barry Stewart qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo , where he competed for a kilometer distance in a four-seater crew, which also included rowers Phillip Coles, Dennis Green and Dennis McGwire - as a result, they were not able to select at the preliminary stage, but through the consolation they still made their way into the semi-finals, and then the final, however, in the decisive final race they took the last ninth place, losing to the winning team of the USSR more than seven seconds.

After the third Olympiad in his career, Stuart remained in the main lineup of the Australian rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. In particular, in 1968 he became a participant in the Olympic Games in Mexico City - in fours a thousand meters together with Phillip Coles, Gordon Jeffrey and Dennis Green reached this time only to the stage of the semi-finals, where he finished fourth. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to the team of young Australian rowers.
