Early life

Gladys Shirley Eastlake Smith was born in Sydenham, Lewisham , Kent on August 14, 1883. She was the daughter of Charles Eastlake Smith and Lizzie Smith (née Cooper). [2] [4] Her father played in the football team for England in 1876 at the UK Championship. [5] [6] [7]

Sports career

She won the competitions held by the All-England club of lawn tennis and croquet in mixed doubles in 1905 together with Reginald Doherty (in the hall tournament). She won the tournament in Monte Carlo in 1906, 1907 and 1908, also won the mixed doubles of the London Women's Tennis Tournament in October 1906 and in 1907, and reached the final of the competition in October 1907. She won the All-England club mixed doubles competition (also an indoor tournament) for the second time in 1908 with Anthony Wilding . In the same year she was awarded a gold medal in the women's singles hall tournament at the Olympic Games in London. She beat the Englishwoman Violet Pinckney with a score of 7-5, 7-5 in the quarter finals, the Swedish Elsa Wallenberg with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals, and the Englishwoman Alice Green with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in finale.

Two days after winning the Olympics, Gladys married Warram Henry Lamplug, a doctor and surgeon. She entered the semifinals of the women's singles at the Wimbledon tournament, already being married, in 1908 and 1910, and won the women's singles champion title at the Royal Games in 1910. She won the competition "Mixed marriage" in 1913 with her husband. Her last exit was a performance in the women's singles at the Wimbledon tournament in 1921.
