Biography and career
Born in 1992 [4] . The son of the president of the Ethiopian Water Sports Federation, Kyros Habte Kinfe [5] . At the time of the performance at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he is a college student [6] .
He began his international career in 2013, becoming a participant in the World Aquatics Championships in the men's 50m freestyle category. At the qualifying stage, the Ethiopian athlete finished 88th out of 106 participants, showing a time of 27.48 seconds and thereby not reaching the semifinals [7] .
In 2014, Robel took part in the world championship in short water swimming , where he showed a time of 27.99 seconds in the men's 50m freestyle qualifying round. This result was also not enough to qualify for the finals [8] .
In 2016, Robel was selected as one of the representatives of Ethiopia at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics . At the opening ceremony of the Games, he was also the standard bearer of his country [9] . The swimmer participated in the 100-meter freestyle race , but he managed to take part only in the qualifying race, where he was the last (59th), showing the time 1: 04.95 minutes and lagging 17.05 seconds behind the leader [10] .
Popularity
In a short time, the athlete received a certain share of fame among Internet users [11] [9] and fans [12] . The reason for this was, in particular, his non-standard physical characteristics: for a typical Olympic swimmer, he is quite well-fed [5] , his weight is 81 kg with a height of 176 cm [4] . In addition, Internet users ridiculed the unusual slowness of a swimmer [13] [6] , although a 65 second result in a 100-meter freestyle is better than the champion at the Olympics until 1908 and the first two world records .
Among his antifans, the swimmer received the nickname Robel the Whale ( Russian Robel-Kit ). Despite the mixed reaction from the fans, Robel himself said that he was pleased with his performance regardless of the result. He also noticed that in his country there are too many runners and few swimmers and that he wanted to do swimming, “do something else” for his country [13] . Robel explained the presence of obesity by the consequences of an injury received after a car accident. He assured that in the future he will lose weight and will return to international competitions [9] .
