History
Neapolitan king Ferdinand I granted the title of duke of San Pedro de Galatino Gyonu (Juan) Kastriot (c. 1456-1514) to the son of Albanian commander Georgy Kastrioti Scanderbeg . His granddaughter Irena Castriota Scanderbeg, Princess de Bisiñano, 3rd Duchess de San Pedro de Galatino, transferred title to the Sanseverino family. In 1615, after the death of her son, Nicolas Bernardino Sanseverino, 5th Duke of San Pedro de Galatino (d. 1606 ), who left no offspring, his successors handed over the duchy of Galatin as payment of debts to Genovese banker Juan Bautista Spinole.
In 1621, Spanish King Philip IV granted the title of duke of San Pedro de Galatino to Juan Bautiste Spinole, the ducal title began to be worn by members of the Spinola family. In the 19th century, their descendants stopped paying Spain’s taxes and the title became vacant, but they were still recognized in Italy. This circumstance took advantage of Count Benalua, a descendant of the brother of the wife of the 3rd Duke of San Pedro de Galatino, to regain the title in Spain.
