Dover ( Eng. Dover Township ) is a first-class township in York County, Pennsylvania , USA . In 2010, 21,078 people lived in the township. Dover is the fourth settlement by the number of inhabitants in the district.

Township is located in the south of Pennsylvania, 15 km northwest of the county capital, York. According to the US Census Bureau, Dover has an area of ​​109 km². Of these, 0.26 km² of water. The Dover territory is completely surrounded by the Borough of Dover (1.0 km²), part of its territory is the statistically isolated area of Weigelstown (15 km²) and the unincluded territories of Edmaye and Davidsburg.

History

The first German settlers in this part of Pennsylvania appeared around 1736. Township Dover was established in the 1740s in Lancaster County. Most settlers came from Palatine County or from Germany. Most of the town lands were fertile, peaches were grown in the north, and corn, potatoes, and wheat were grown in the rest of the town. As of 1783, 1367 people lived in Dover (697 men, 670 women), there were 219 houses, 146 barns, 7 mills. Township was incorporated in 1824. Since the 1880s, strawberry cultivation has become an economically significant industry [1] [2] .

In 1983, the Petits Ford House was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places [3] . In October 2004, the Dover District School District, which includes Dover, Washington, and Dover boroughs, revised biology curricula by introducing the concept of “Intelligent Design” as an alternative to evolutionary theory . In 2005, many teachers refused to teach on new curricula [4] . Dover’s 11 parents of parents filed a lawsuit against the Governing Council of the school district regarding the statement that “Intelligent Design” is “a representation of the origin of life that is different from Darwin’s views” and should be taught in the ninth year of science courses. In December 2005, Judge John Jones decided that the decision of the Dover School District Council was unconstitutional, thus satisfying the plaintiffs' claim [5] .

Township Dover is the fourth settlement by the number of inhabitants in the district (after the capital of York , the town of York and the town of Springsbury). According to the 2010 census, the population of Dover was 21,078 people (of which 49.1% were men and 50.9% were women), there were 8359 households and 6113 families in the township. Racial composition : white - 93.1%, African Americans - 3.3%, Native Americans - 0.3%, Asians - 0.7% and representatives of two or more races - 1.5%. For 2014, the population of Dover Township was distributed by origin as follows: 10.4% - American, 44.4% - German, 14.7% - Irish, 4.7% - Italian, 7.8% - English origin [6 ] .

Out of 21,078 township people, 12,875 live in the statistically isolated area of Weigelstown (density - 858.3 people / km²), the remaining 8203 people do not belong to statistically isolated areas (the density on the remaining territory of the townshope is 87.3 people / km²) [ 6] .

The population of the city by age range according to the 2010 census was as follows: 22.7% - residents under 18 years of age, 3.1% - between 18 and 21 years old, 59.4% - from 21 to 65 years old and 14.8% - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 40.9 years. For every 100 females in Dover, there were 96.6 males, while for 100 adult females there were already 93.5 males of comparable age [6] .

Of the 8359 households, 73.1% were families: 58.5% of couples living together (21.1% with children under 18 years of age); 9.6% are women living without husbands and 5.0% are men living without wives. 26.9% did not have a family. On average, 2.52 people conduct households, and the average family size is 2.91 people. Alone, 21.7% of the population lived, 9.3% were single elderly people (over 65) [6] .

Economics

In 2014, out of 16,970 people over 16 years old, 10,973 were employed. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 49,320 a year, compared to $ 35,871 of the average annual income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 66,709, for a household - at $ 57,650. The per capita income is $ 27,159 a year. 5.8% of the total number of families in Dover and 7.2% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [6] .
