The song was recorded at Stargroves , England in 1972. Songwriters Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were inspired to write the Indian tune they heard while traveling to Bombay . This was the first track from the album, proposed for the radio label Atlantic . Its premiere took place on March 24, 1973 at the BBC Radio One in the program Rosko lunch time show. [2]

As with the song “ Over the Hills and Far Away, ” recorded on side A of the single, “Dancing Days” was presented by the group in concert performance long before its commercial release. Although the bootleg claims to prove that this was the first time the song was performed at the Wembley Empire Pool in November 1971, evidence suggests that its inclusion of the song on this tape was a hoax. The earliest documented case of a concert performance of a song occurred in Seattle on June 19, 1972, where the song was performed twice: once during the main set and again, as in an encore. After that, the song was often performed throughout the remainder of this tour in the version recorded on How the West Was Won . After the release of the album Houses of the Holy, “Dancing Days” began to be performed much less frequently, although an abbreviated, acoustic version was sometimes performed during a 1977 tour in the USA [2] . The full electric version was encore on July 13, 1973 at Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, as featured in the Monsters of Rock bootleg.
