Biography

In 1771, he became the head of the expedition that discovered the island of Kerguelen Earth on February 13, 1772 (now the Kerguelen Archipelago ). After the 2nd expedition undertaken by Kerguelen in 1773 , he was accused of partly leaving his crew on an inhospitable island, and was arrested, despite proving to him that this part of the crew had been rescued. Later he took another series of trips by sea with his sons.

During the war for the liberation of the United States, Kerguelen armed a guard of marque , and in a short time captured 7 British ships. Soon after, Kerguelen was captured and arrested by the British during a round-the-world trip with the scientific goal of the 10-gun corvette Liber-Navigator, despite the free-floating passport received from the English admiralty.

During the revolution, Kerguelen was appointed director of the department of the ministry and promoted to rear admirals. In 1794 he was dismissed.
