Biography
Harry was born on May 14, 1873 in ( Indiana ) in the family of John (1845-1928) and Maria Bruner Millis (1845-1920) [2] . Harry was educated at Paoli High School [3] .
In 1895, Millis received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1896 a Master of Arts degree from Indiana University , was among the first graduates of John Commons . He began teaching in 1896–1898 as a teacher of sociology, and in 1898–1899 as a teacher of economics at the University of Chicago , where he received his Ph.D. in 1899 [3] .
In 1899-1902, Millis worked as a librarian at in Chicago . In 1902-1903 he was a professor of economics and sociology at the [3] . In the years 1904-1912 he taught at Stanford University . In the years 1912-1916 he was the first head of the Department of Economics of the University of Kansas [4] . Since 1916, Assistant Professor of the University of Chicago , in 1928-1938, Head of the Department of Economics, and since 1938, Emeritus Professor of Economics , University of Chicago . Millis was a member and president of the American Economic Association in 1934, a member of the Chicago Bibliographical Society, and a member of the scientific club of the University of Arkansas [3] .
In 1940-1945 the chairman of the National Council on Labor .
- Family
In 1901, Millis married Alice May Shoff (1870–13.04.1954), who had a son, John Shoff (Nov. 22, 1903-01.01.1988), the future president of the university Case Western Reserve , and two daughters Savilia (born 1901) and Charlotte (born 1906) [5] .
