Field Violence
The confrontation between these teams became known due to violence on the field and beyond. Players of “Estudiantes” applied tactics of dirty play and constant minor fouls in the second match, which the referee did not notice [1] .
Two Italian football players (Prati and Rivera) received serious injuries during the game, and the French striker of Argentine descent Nestor Combin left the field in blood and on a stretcher. After the game, Combin himself was arrested by Argentine police on charges of evading military service . He spent the night in a cell and was released after clarifying that he had fulfilled his duty as a French citizen. [1]
Despite the victory in the second game with a score of 2: 1, “Estudiantes” lost in the sum of two matches 3: 4 and “Milan” became the owner of the Intercontinental Cup. The Argentine press did not hush up the dirty game of Pincharratos and defeated their team. Among other things, journalists wrote that “the British were right”, recalling the events of the last confrontation between “Estudiantes” and “ Manchester United ” and the reaction of the English press, fans and football players to this [1] .
The Argentine Football Association has imposed severe sanctions on Estudiantes. Goalkeeper Alberto Poletti , who hit the “golden boy” of “Milan” Gianni Rivera , was lifted from football for life. Ramon Suarez , who broke his nose to Combin, was suspended from participating in international matches for five years and received a 30-match suspension. Eduardo Luhan Manera was disqualified for 20 matches and suspended from international competitions for three years. In addition, Luhan Manera and Poletti received a prison term of 30 days [1] .
The image of the tournament, spoiled back in 1968, deteriorated even more. In the 1970s, Europe was often not represented by the winner, but by the finalist of the European Cup, and twice the tournament did not take place at all.
