In 1939 he graduated from the historical department of the Rostov n / a Pedagogical Institute.
From 1938 to 1941 he taught history at the agricultural college of the city of Nalchik .

In 1948-1952 he worked at the Novocherkassk Reclamation Engineering Institute as a senior lecturer, associate professor, head of the department. He defended his thesis and was approved as an assistant professor.
In 1954 he was appointed director of the Novocherkassk Pedagogical Institute.
In connection with the transfer of the Novocherkassk Pedagogical Institute to Taganrog and its transformation into the Taganrog Pedagogical Institute, in 1955 the rector of the Taganrog Pedagogical Institute. Under the leadership of Kovyrshin in 1955-1959. The material base of TSPI was strengthened and the initial composition of the teaching staff of the institute was formed. In August 1959, Nikolai Pavlovich transferred to work at the Rostov Pedagogical Institute and worked there as an assistant professor of the Department of History until 1975. He had government awards: medals "For the Defense of the Caucasus", "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War."
Nikolai Pavlovich’s sister, Larisa Pavlovna Gritsun (12/06/1933-03.02.2007), also followed in the footsteps of her older brother and worked as a teacher for many years, was the head teacher of secondary school No. 33 in Taganrog.
