Tarn, Adam

Adam Tarn ( Polish: Adam Tarn ; October 20, 1902 , Lodz - June 23, 1975 , Lausanne ) - Polish playwright and theater figure.

The son of a lawyer. Studied in Switzerland and France, published since 1918 as a journalist and literary critic. In 1937 he left Poland, during the Second World War he lived in the United States. He returned to Poland in 1949, making his debut as a playwright with the play “Common Business” ( Polish: Zwykła sprawa ), which critically describes McCarthyism’s policy in the USA. The play was staged in 1950 and awarded the State Prize of Poland. The Ordinance was followed by the plays Ortega (1952), Augean Stables (1954), Ruined Life (1958). In 1952-1953 He headed the Theater of the House of the Polish Army in Warsaw, in 1955-1968. He headed the literary department in various Warsaw theaters.

In 1956, he began publishing the monthly drama magazine Dialogue. This magazine, “innovative, free of political chewing gum and oriented towards the Western avant-garde, quickly began to set the tone in Polish theater life” [1] . On the pages of the dialogue, in particular, the first play by Slavomir Mrozek “Police” was released, and Tarn personally supported and admonished the young author; the correspondence of Mrozhek and Tarn for 12 years (1963-1975) was published.

In 1968, Tarn was removed from the leadership of the Dialogue, after which he decided to emigrate. In the last years of his life, he taught in Canada.
