The son of a pastor He studied philosophy, theology and medicine in Lemgo , Hamelin , Lüneburg , Lübeck , Danzig , Kraków . In 1681 he settled in Sweden.

In 1683, as part of the Swedish embassy Ludwig Fabricius to Persia, who was recommended by the famous philosopher and historian Samuel Pufendorf , visited the Moscow kingdom , describing in detail the journey through the cities of the Volga region in his notes.

As secretary of the Swedish Embassy in Persia , in 1685 he entered as a surgeon on the Dutch fleet cruising at that time in the Persian Gulf and met Arabia , Hindustan , Java , Sumatra , Siam and Japan . In Japan, he spent two years.

Kempfer is best known for his written in German and translated into English essay "History of Japan" ("History of Japan"; London, 1727 ), which then appeared in several other languages. In addition, he promulgated the Amoenitatum exoticarum poëtico-politico-physico-medicarum fasciculi V (Lemgo, 1712 ). Banks printed it "Icones selectae plantarum, quasin Japonia collegit" (London, 1791 ), Adelung - extract from his "Diarium itineris ad aulam Moscoviticam". Most of his unprinted manuscripts, rich in important observations, are kept in the British Museum .

In 1723 , in Nuremberg (in German), a separate book published his essay "The new states of Kazan, Astrakhan, Georgia and many others, who paid tribute to the tsar, the sultan and the shah ...". The Russian translation of some parts of this book, made back in the 18th century, is kept as a special manuscript in the Central Historical Archive in Leningrad [1] .
