Francois-Christophe Kellermann, Duke of Valmey ( fr. François-Christophe Kellermann, duc de Valmy ; May 28, 1735 , Strasbourg - September 23, 1820 , Paris ) - French commander of the Revolutionary Wars , under Napoleon I - honorary Marshal of France .

Biography

A native of Strasbourg , in 1752 he was recruited into the French Hussars, in 1788 he was already a general.

 
The Battle of Valmy

In 1792, Kellerman, who enthusiastically joined the revolution, was appointed commander in chief of the Moselle army, united with Dumourier and on September 20 stood the famous cannonade at Valmi , resisting the superior forces of the Prussians. Accused of not sufficiently energetically pursuing the retreating Prussians, Kellerman was acquitted by the court [6] .

In May 1793, Kellerman stood at the head of the alpine army. In August - October 1793, Kellerman commanded an army besieging Lyon , which rebelled against the Jacobin dictatorship .

Soon after the capture of Lyon, Kellerman was again accused of lack of energy and thrown into prison, and only the fall of Robespierre saved Kellerman from the scaffold.

In 1801, he was appointed president of the Senate, in 1804 he received the rank of Marshal of France and was elevated to the Dukes of Valmey .

In 1814, he sided with Louis XVIII , who made him peer of France .

During the Hundred Days, he refused to join Napoleon. At the second Restoration, he voted for the execution of Marshal Ney .

He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .

In 1892, a monument was erected to Kellerman in Valmi.

Family

The son of Marshal Francois Etienne , became a prominent cavalry general during the Napoleonic Wars, and his grandson, Francois Christoph Edouard , became a diplomat. Both of them inherited the title of Duke de Valmi.
