The early years

He was born on February 9 (21), 1806 in Estonia. His father Karl Yevstafyevich Baumgarten at first was in military service, but later, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he transferred to civilian service.

Nikolai Karlovich was educated at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum and at the end of the course entered the Life Guards Jaeger Regiment .

Military Service

In 1828, he was at the theater of military operations against Turkey and especially distinguished himself in the siege of the fortress of Varna , and during the passage of Emperor Nicholas I from Odessa to the army he was in the convoy of His Majesty.

During the uprising in the Kingdom of Poland in 1831, Baumgarten acted with his troops in the rebellious region, participated in many skirmishes with the rebel forces: May 4 at the town of Porembach (for which he received the Order of St. Anne of the 4th degree with the inscription "for courage" ); May 7 - at Kuskovo; May 11 - not far from Tykutsyn, May 13 - at the village of Yakada, the 14th - at Ostroleka, for which he was awarded the Highest Benevolence and the Order of Anna of the 3rd degree with swords and a bow; August 3 - at the village of Topolovo; and August 25-26 near Warsaw ; and - in the capture of the suburb of Will, where he was shell-shocked in the leg and received the order of St. 4th degree Vladimir with swords and bow.

In 1844 he was transferred, of his own free will, lieutenant colonel to the cuirassier regiment.

In 1845 he was promoted to the rank of colonel. January 12, 1846 received the Order of St. George 4th degree for the immaculate length of service for 25 years in officer ranks. [one]

In December 1848, Baumgarten was appointed commander of the cuirassier regiment, March 30, 1854 promoted to major general. During the Crimean War, Baumgarten was in a corps guarding the borders from Austria .

In 1858, he was the manager of the Moscow Commissariat Commission, but the next year he left this post, which he did not feel like, and was soon appointed director of the Alexander Cadet Corps to Moscow, where there were big riots at that time. At Baumgarten's initiative, this cadet corps was transferred to Vilna in early 1860.

During the uprising in the Northwest Territory , Baumgarten, on behalf of the Governor-General M.N. Muravyov , took part with the military in pacifying the territory.

In 1863, he was first assistant commander of the 17th Division, and a year later the commander of the 23rd Infantry Division in Finland .

In 1865, Baumgarten was promoted to lieutenant general and in 1866 was appointed head of the 16th Infantry Division.

Personal life

For domestic reasons and for his upset health, he soon transferred to the reserve, and 14 years later he was promoted to general from the cavalry with dismissal.

His son - Leonty Nikolaevich von Baumgarten - also became a cavalry general.

Upon his retirement, Nikolai Karlovich lived in his own house in St. Petersburg , and died on June 19 ( July 1 ), 1886 in his estate Perevoznoy, Ufa province . He was buried in St. Petersburg, in the Novodevichy Convent .
