Biography

Nikolai Gustavovich Baggovut was born in a noble family of the Estland province on January 7, 1808.

Having completed his education in the 1st Cadet Corps , he came out on June 25, 1827 as an ensign in the Horse and Artillery Company No. 4, and the next year he went on a campaign against the Turks . For the difference in the battle at the Zhurzhi fortress and when taking a position from the battle at the Shumly fortress, he was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 4th degree with the inscription "for courage" and the same Order of the 3rd degree with a bow.

Barely returning to Russia, Baggovut again entered the field of battle, acting to pacify the Polish rebellion of 1831. Here, shortly before the assault on Warsaw , he managed to show rare courage; being in the ranks of the 4th cavalry company, which had advanced ahead to the enemy fortification No. 21, to prepare for the attack, which was supposed to be followed by the attack, Baggovut, after several successful card shots, volunteered to rush to storm the fortification. With 7-8 brave hunters from the people of his platoon, he quickly breaks into the fortifications, turns the embarrassed Poles into flight and even manages to rivet several enemy guns. For his brilliant feat, Ensign Baggovut was awarded the Order of St. December 25, 1831 . George IV class (No. 4663 according to the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov).

In 1849, already with the rank of captain, he was sent for the purchase of horses for the guard troops, and for the successful completion of this order, he was transferred to the guards horse artillery, leaving him a member of the commission for repairing horses of the guards cavalry. December 6, 1852 promoted to colonel; in November 1858 he received the equestrian-light battery number 10 in command, and five years later he was appointed commander of the 5th cavalry artillery brigade and was promoted to major general on August 30 of that year. In September 1865, Baggovut was appointed assistant artillery chief of the Kharkov Military District ; in March 1876 - the chief of artillery of the same district; On August 30 of the same year he was promoted to lieutenant general, and in November 1879 he was appointed commandant in Sveaborg . Baggovut was July 9, 1887, enlisted as a member of the Alexander Committee on the wounded, and remained in this rank to death. Among other awards he had the Order of St. Stanislav 1st degree (1870), St. Anna of the 1st degree (1878) and St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree (1884).

He died on February 1, 1890.
