Distribution

Australia , Oceania, South and Southeast Asia . The invasive species Ooceraea biroi has been introduced to other regions (Hawaii, Madagascar, Caribbean, Fiji) [1] .

Description

Small ants (about 3 mm) brown, monomorphic. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen is two-segmented (the third abdominal segment following the petiol is narrow and turned into the postpetiol ), but there are no obvious constrictions between the following abdominal segments (IV, V, and VI). Prono-mesopleural suture developed. Propodeal spiracles are located in the lower part of the posterior thorax. Pygidium with modified bristles. In antennae of workers and females 9, 10 or 11 segments (in males 11 or less often 12). Ocellia absent, complex eyes reduced (1–5 facets) or absent. The mandibular palps of the workers are 3-segmented (in males 5), the lower labial palps consist of 2 segments (in males 3). Middle and hind tibia with one comb spur. Pupae naked (cocoons absent). Nest in the soil [1] .

Systematics

The genus Ooceraea Roger, 1862 was first described in 1862 by the type species Ooceraea fragosa [2] . Subsequently, Ooceraea was considered a subgenus or synonym for the genus Cerapachys (Bolton 2003). In 2016, it was restored to an independent clan status during an audit of all nomadic ants conducted by the American worldmecologist Marek L. Borowiec , Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of California at Davis , Davis , California , USA ) [1] . Ooceraea is close to the sister group Chrysapace + Cerapachys [1] . Initially, the genus was part of the subfamily Cerapachyinae . In 2014, it was proposed (Brady et al.) To include it and all dorilomorphic genera and subfamilies in the expanded subfamily Dorylinae [3] .
