Biography
Alexander Slatnov was born on September 19, 1950 in the city of Teterovo . He played handball as a child, but at some point decided to go rowing. He was trained in Neubrandenburg at the local sports club of the same name "Neubrandenburg".
He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in 1971, when he joined the East German national rowing team and attended the World Championships in Yugoslav Belgrade, where he, together with team-mate Rainer Kurt, won the gold dignity in the classification of double canoes at a distance of 1000 meters.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich - he fought for the medals in two thousand meters together with the same Rainer Kurt: he reached the final stage safely, but in the decisive race he finished only fourth, stopping at a step away from the prize positions - in front of him were crews from the USSR, Hungary and Poland.
After the Munich Olympics, Slatnov remained in the main composition of the GDR rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1975, he performed at the world championship in Belgrade, where he again won gold in the kilometer discipline of doubles with his new partner Gerhard Rummel , including overtaking the Romanian crew of Larion Sergey and Polykarp Malykhin at the finish line, becoming the second.
Soon after the end of these competitions he decided to end his sports career, giving way to young German rowers in the national team. Subsequently, it became known that almost throughout his sports career he was a secret informant of the Ministry of State Security of the GDR and under the conspiracy name Peter Schreiber reported there about all the events taking place in the national team.
Until the last years of his life, he lived in Neubrandenburg, worked in an architectural firm. He died as a result of cancer on May 21, 2003 [1] .
