Life
During the Crimean campaign, he participated as a divisional general in the battles on Alma and under Inkerman. In July 1856 he was appointed commander of the British ground forces and made a number of important reforms: he took care of organizing permanent camps and improving the armament of the troops, agreed to abolish corporal punishment in the army and to destroy the purchase of officer diplomas.
In 1887 he was appointed commander in chief of the British army. He commanded the British troops until 1895 .
Family
Married to actress Sarah Ferbrozer and had three sons from her, bearing (as she herself) the name Fitzgeorge; with his death, the title of the Duke of Cambridge returned to the crown (in 2011 , i.e. 107 years later, Prince William of Wales received it on the occasion of his marriage).
