John Mitchell Kemble ( English John Mitchell Kemble ; 1807 - March 26, 1857 ) - English historian and philologist .
Biography
He studied under the guidance of the Grimm brothers in Göttingen and studied mainly the Anglo-Saxon period. He showed his vast knowledge in the publication Beowulf ( 1833 - 1837 ) and in journal articles: Ueber die Stammtafel der Westsachsen ( 1836 ), Codex Diplomaticus Aevi Saxonis ( 1839 ). His History of the Saxons in England ( 1843 ) was the first attempt to study the early history of England from primary sources. In 1857 , he published State Papers and Correspondence illustrative of the Social and Political State of Europe from the Revolution to the accession of the House of Hanover.
