Benur Aleksanovich (Aleksandrovich [1] ) Pashayan ( Armenian Բենուր Փաշայան ; born February 13 [2] 1959 , Azavreti , Georgian SSR ) - Soviet Greco-Roman wrestler , two-time champion of the USSR (1982, 1983), two-time European champion ( 1981, 1982), two-time world champion (1982, 1983), winner of the Friendship-84 competition (1984). Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1982).

Biography

Benur Pashayan was born on February 13, 1959 in the village of Azavreti (Azavret) in the Akhalkalaki region of the Georgian SSR. He was engaged in Greco-Roman wrestling in Yerevan under the leadership of Albert Mnatsakanyan and Harutyun Khachatryan . In 1977 and 1979 he became the world champion among juniors.

Benur Pashayan's first adult success was a victory at the 1981 European Championships in Gothenburg . In 1982, he won the USSR Championship , European Championship and World Championship . In 1983, he again became the champion of the USSR and the world champion. In the same year he was recognized by the International Federation of United Wrestling Styles as the best Greco-Roman style wrestler.

Benur Pashayan was the main favorite of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984) in his weight category, but shortly before the start of the Olympics, the political leadership of the USSR decided to boycott it by Soviet athletes. Together with fighters from the socialist countries who joined the boycott, he participated in the Friendship-84 competitions and became their winner.

In 1985, Benur Pashayan ended his sports career. In 1986-1989 he was a coach of the Armenian SSR team. In 1989 he graduated from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture. In 1999–2000, he served as president of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia .
