Mardini's Feat
In August 2015, during the Civil War in Syria, her house was destroyed and she and her sister were forced to flee. Having reached Lebanon, and then Turkey, they agreed to cross the coast of Greece illegally in a motor boat. On board were 20 people, although the ship was intended to carry no more than seven. When the motor stalled and the boat began to sink in the middle of the Aegean, the only ones who could swim were Yusra and her sister. As a result, the Syrian girls dragged a boat with 18 people for three hours. They reached the island of Lesbos and rescued all fellow travelers. [8]
