Nadim Zhmayel was born in Bikfaye on May 1, 1982 in the family of Solange Gemayel (nee Tutunzhi), and Bashir Gemayel , a Christian-Maronite from Bikfaya, mountain Lebanon [1] . Nadim's grandfather was the founder of the party Kataib Pierre Gemayel . Nadim younger than his two sisters, Yumna (born 1980) and Maya (born 1978) [2] . Maia was only 18 months old, she was killed in 1980 as a result of an explosion of a car bomb that was intended for her father [3] .

Nadim Gemayel's father, Bashir Gemayel [2] , was an outstanding Christian leader and president-elect of Lebanon (1982). Bashir Gemayel was killed on September 14, 1982, 21 days after being elected president. Nadim was only 5 months old when his father was killed [1] .

After school, Nadim Gemayel moved to France to continue his legal education and graduated from the Pantheon-Assas University in 2004 [4] . He is currently practicing law with a well-known law firm that has offices in Lebanon and Qatar [5] .

In addition to his position within the Kataib party, Nadim Gemayel also serves as co-chairman of the Bashir Gemayel Foundation, founded in 1982 after the murder of his father [6] .

Political activities

Believing in what he said was the dream of his father [7] to free Lebanon from all foreign invaders and the people uniting it, Nadym Gemayel began his political struggle at a relatively young age. [eight]

Syrian hegemony 1994–2005

After the assassination of Bashir Gemayel in 1982, Lebanon entered an era when Syrian control began, and ended in 1990 with the seizure of the presidential palace in Baabda by the Syrian forces. [9]

Nadim Gemayel began his struggle against the Syrians, organizing and participating in anti-Syrian demonstrations with other anti-Syrian groups within universities, as well as lobbying for Lebanon during university years outside Lebanon. [five]

Nadeem Gemayel’s most prominent speeches, besides his annual speech, were at the time of the MTV stop in 2002, [10] where he was at the forefront of the demonstration to reopen the station and was almost arrested by security officers, as well as in the Baabda-Alei election 2003. [11]

Cedar Revolution 2005

The assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005 led to a series of demonstrations against the Syrian forces [12] and Lebanese security officials. The demonstrations ended on March 14, 2005, which was later known to anti-Syrian groups as the “cedar revolution”.

Nadim Gemayel was present throughout the period and was among many Anti-Syrian political factions to set up a tent with his supporters in Martyrs Square demanding the resignation of the government and security forces, the full and unconditional withdrawal of Syrian troops and the creation of an international commission to investigate the assassination of the then Lebanese Prime Minister Minister Hariri and the latest political assassinations.

Kataib

The so-called cedar revolution was followed by the almost complete withdrawal of Syrian troops on April 26, 2005 [13] after international pressure, mainly by Americans and Europeans.

Despite the withdrawal of Syria, Syria is still present politically through its intelligence agents [14] and alliances with the Lebanese factions that he created.

Nadim Gemayel saw Lebanon’s second independence and historic opportunity to officially launch its political career and participate in the Kataib party to fight the Syrian security forces in Lebanon.

On April 26, 2006, the Kataib district in Ashfaria, [15] after reconstruction, was opened and launched by Nadim Gemeyel. At the ceremony, Nadeem Gemayel spoke out embodying his political beliefs and goals, and was completed and lit candles at his father's commemoration.

2009 Parliamentary Elections

Nadim Zhmayel decided to run for parliament in the first district of Beirut (Ashrafiyah, Rmeyl, Saifi), his main rival for the Maronite seat was Massoud al-Ashqar. He ran as a candidate for Kataib and on March 14, along with Gibran Tueni’s daughter Nile Tuayne. In the elections of June 7, 2009 there was a very close race for parliament, Nadim Gemayel won the Maronite seat in the first district of Beirut, and now a deputy in the new parliament of Lebanon. Nyla Touain also won a Greek Orthodox place in the same area.

Bashir Gemeyel's Annual Memorial Mass

On the 26th anniversary of the murder of his father, Nadim Zhmayel turned to the Lebanese and Christians, mainly urging them to unite under one banner "to build a sovereign state."

He also stressed Hezbollah’s weapons, calling them illegal and noted that only the Lebanese armed forces carry weapons. He continued: “We are for dialogue without preconditions ... Because we care about the people of Lebanon and the future of young people.” [sixteen]
