Biography
The cause of Njent joining the ranks of the Irish volunteers was a tragic incident: on March 20, 1973, on the corner of Merrion Street and Grosvenor Road, 15-year-old Kiran Nugent and his 16-year-old friend Bernard McEarlin saw a passing vehicle of a paramilitary group of Ulster loyalists . One of the soldiers asked the way for the guys, while the other opened heavy fire from a submachine gun. Macherlin was killed on the spot, Nugent was wounded eight times in the chest, arms and back [1] [2] .
Soon, Nugent joined the "temporary" wing of the IRA . He was arrested at the age of 16 by British troops and sent to Cramlin Road prison for 5 months, but soon the sentence was canceled and released. On February 9, 1975, he was arrested again and sent to Long Kesh prison, without a trial, in cell 4. On November 12, he was again released, but on May 12, 1976, he was arrested again. On September 14, a court sentenced Nugent to three years in prison for stealing a car. Nugent’s special prisoner status was not awarded, and he was forced to wear a prison uniform. However, it is to the guards that they will not force him to wear a prison uniform and may even pin her back [3] [4] . Without obeying the requirements, he began to wear bed linen as clothing, starting a blanket protest.
In support of the protest, Njent was joined by Jackie McMullen [5] and six more Republicans caught in the Beechmount quarter. By Christmas 1976, the number of supporters of the protest had grown to 40, and the protests dragged on for another five years. The end came in 1981, when seven IRA rebels and three INAA rebels died as a result of the hunger strike [6] .
Nugent had four children. He died of a heart attack on May 4, 2000 [4] .
