Sal ( Fr. Canton de Saales ) - the abolished canton in the north-east of France , in the Alsace region , department of the Lower Rhine , Molsem district . The area of Sal Canton was 85.83 km², the number of communes in the canton was 7, the population was 3,833 people (according to INSEE , 2012 [1] ), with an average density of 45 inhabitants per square kilometer (km²).

Content
History
The canton was created in 1793 [2] .
From 1940 to 1945, the territory was occupied by Nazi Germany .
Before the administrative reform of 2015, the canton included 7 communes. According to the law of May 17, 2013 and the decree of February 18, 2014, the number of cantons in the department of Lower Rhine decreased from 44 to 23. The new territorial division of the departments into cantons entered into force during the 2015 elections. After the reform, the canton was abolished [3] [4] .

As a result of administrative reform in March 2015, the canton was abolished. The communes were transferred to the newly created canton of Mützig ( Molsem district ).
