In 1915, the importance of fighter aircraft increased, which in turn led to high losses among reconnaissance aircraft. This led to the leadership of the German Air Force requiring an armed version of this aircraft, which was done by the LVG company, which created the CI variant, which was an improved version of the LVG BI / BII reconnaissance with a reinforced structure, where the pilot and observer switched places (before that, the observer was sitting in front cockpit, and the pilot in the rear) and weapons were added in the form of a Parabelum machine gun mounted on the Schneider ring machine gun turret in the rear cockpit (this option became so successful that it was used on aircraft of this type s before the end of the war). It was released only in a small series, giving way to the main production version of the LVG C.II.
